Sustainable Reservoir Management

We build a technological bridge that restores the environmental balance of sediment transport and is as close to natural sediment transport as technologically possible.

We take a long-term approach in which the sediment is transported downstream according to the flow regime. With this approach, sediment is not lost, rather it is continuously transported downstream. This helps us achieve near-to-nature regeneration of the sediment budget and restoration of sediment continuity.

Our solution contributes to a consistent body of water and sustainable management helps preserve and improve it. The issue of siltation must be solved for the long term in order to strike a balance between stakeholders and protected resources. Aside from anthropological and economic interests, this also means taking into consideration the environmental sustainability of animals and habitats. For sustainable water management, sediment should not be just continuously removed from the sediment budget but rather also added directly back to the system.

  • Desedimentation solutions specially designed for water storage areas but also for free-flowing reaches (streams and rivers) facing erosion due to sediment deficits
  • Patented, one-of-a-kind, continuous transport process for reservoirs with sedimentation issues

  • Online documentation during the process and instrumentation for monitoring
  • Our process was nominated for the German Economic Innovation Award in 2015 and the Platts Global Energy Award in 2013

“Above all, our solution avoids landfill waste and the transport logistics needed for it. Sediment and silt don't require time-consuming and expensive dredging, complicated removal and, ultimately, dumping.”
Thomas Groß, Managing Director, Hülskens Sediment GmbH

Sediment Continuity

Through anthropological intervention into natural waters, humans have greatly altered their hydromorphology. This has had a substantial impact on sediment budget and, thus, directly on the ecology of natural waters.

When it comes to hydromorphological quality, the WRRL states that the continuity of sediment is an essential criterion for maintaining the proper condition of surface waters. For significantly altered or artificial bodies of water, it is imperative to ensure they are as ecologically passable as possible.

Taking all of this into consideration, we have developed the ConSedTrans® process as part of our contribution to keeping waters in excellent condition.

No Dam Structure Modifications

Our process requires no modifications to the dam structure. Operations also remain undisrupted, often even during installation.  The process meets the requirements of the EU's Water Framework Directive (Annex V) for environmentally preferred sediment continuity as well as all relevant directives and codes of practice.

With our technology, we will gladly be your efficient and affordable service provider for sediment and reservoir management.

Since every reservoir is unique, we adapt our approach to local conditions and needs. A preliminary study and site inspection help us plan your sediment management. Sediment and hydrological analyses are conducted to determine the level of sediment transfer.  If sediment is to be transferred via turbine, the determination of turbine conditions is included in the preliminary study.  The result is that you obtain a qualitative basis for the sustainable management of your reservoir, which can also form the basis for a water management permit.

ConSedTrans®

The ConSedTrans® process refers to the continuous transport of sediment from deposition site to outflow.

Floating platforms with the proper equipment loosen the sediment deposit, transport it through a hose system, and discharges it naturally into the downstream body of water. Whether the outflow goes directly to the downstream body of water or the sediment should pass through the water intakes.can be determined at a later time. It is also possible to first transport the sediment over land to a treatment plant. The process is fully automated and runs 24/7. It is parameter-driven and can be adapted to local conditions.

We continuously measure and document sediment transport, and can make adjustments on the fly. This allows our system to stay within all environmental limits. Our process requires no modifications to the dam structure. Operations also remain undisrupted, often even during installation. The process meets the requirements of the EU's Water Framework Directive (Annex V) for environmentally preferred sediment continuity as well as all relevant directives and codes of practice.
